The reading curriculum
Reading enables children to bring learning to life and supports them in accessing a deeper level of subject specific knowledge and vocabulary, across a range of curriculum areas. As such, texts are carefully chosen to ensure key vocabulary and concepts are taught and embedded across the curriculum.

We carefully plan the range of texts that children are exposed to both across the year and throughout their time at school. This is known as a reading spine and is the backbone of our Reading Curriculum.
- English texts are planned across the year, with companion (linked) texts available in class for children to access and enjoy
- Guided reading texts are chosen to support comprehension and are often linked to the English or Connected Curriculum topics.
- Connected Curriculum texts, both fiction and non-fiction are available in class to bring learning to life, make links, engage and inspire
- Class readers are read to the class by the class teacher. Listening to stories is vital to developing reading comprehension and enjoyment. Along with these class readers, In Reception and Year One, the same text is repeated over the week, to support the understanding and use of story vocabulary and structure. Along with these class readers, children are encouraged to bring in their own favourite books to share with the class.
We continue to review our reading spine to ensure that it remains relevant, diverse and appropriate for our children.
