Fostering a love of reading

As a school, our aim is to foster a love of reading. Adults are positive role models for reading and take every opportunity to promote and engage readers. This is what the children tell us:

‘’We have loads of good stories, like Rosie’s Walk.’’ Year 1

‘’We love to listen to our class book at the end of the day and sometimes in guided reading.’’ Year 4

‘’We bring in our favourite books to read at story time.’’ Year 1

Approaches used to foster a love of reading

  • Class readers to listen to inspire
  • Reading clubs in Key Stage 1 and Lower Key stage 2 with an open invitation to read at lunchtime
  • Book clubs in Upper Key Stage 2 with pupil and teacher book clubs focusing on reading the same book and discussing this as a group
  • Weekly Library sessions
  • Junior librarians in Key Stage 2 to support readers and recommend books
  • Reading volunteers reading with children across school
  • Annual themed book weeks
  • Use of outdoor areas for ‘al fresco’ reading!
  • Dance and drama: Links to drama and dance are built into planning and focus weeks to engage and strengthen pupils’ understanding of texts and authors.
  • Visiting readers/ relax and read sessions in Reception and Reading breakfasts in Nursery
  • Scholastic and Usborne book fairs
  • After school additional reading sessions
  • Teachers sharing their favourite books in assemblies

Reading Journals

Each class from Year 1 to 6 has a reading journal.  Children can take the journal home and draw and write about their favourite books.  This is always very popular and children love to share this with the rest of the class and encourage them to read the book themselves.

Reading Environments: classrooms

Every classroom has a book corner, where children can access a range of fiction and non-fiction books. Children contribute to the displays, focusing on their focus author or topic.

Reading Environments: libraries

Children enjoy using our Key Stage One and Key Stage Two school libraries, where a range of exciting books can be found. Books include a diverse range of authors from old favourites and classics to contemporary children’s fiction. These are updated regularly to ensure that they reflect our school community and children’s interests.
