Our nursery challenge – ‘Eating a rainbow‘

This year in nursery, we are embarking on a healthy eating challenge, which we have named ‘Eat a rainbow’. Based on the book by Claire Potter called ‘Which food will you choose?’, our challenge is to try a whole range of foods over the year, of different colours from the rainbow.

In the book, a family takes trips to the supermarket and every day choose foods of different colours to try at home, to avoid beige coloured foods and try something new. In nursery we are introducing different coloured food to the children throughout the year, but as well as tasting the food we are also exploring the textures, smells and look of them.

Highlights so far have been tasting lemon juice; the differing opinions on whether sour is good or bad was very interesting, enjoying sensory play with baked beans and tasting dried fruits such as apricots and banana chips.

The aim of our challenge isn’t to label any foods, including those that are beige, as ‘bad’, but to spark curiosity and interest around food, which so far has been a success!
