Getting stuck into the weather - learning about the seasons
As the winter weather took hold, the children were naturally very interested in the obvious change in seasons. Their experiences at home with the snow and of going sledging and building snowmen, lent itself well to some learning linked to snow and ice. We brought the inside in, during the very cold snap, by adding ice to the water tray, as well as investigating icicles and how they changed over the day, as they warmed up – and melted! The children were fascinated by how the ice changed as they added coloured water to the ice using pipettes, as well as how the white went translucent with the simple addition of plain water.
As part of our ongoing development of children’s fine motor skills, the children were invited to use scissors to snip and make their own snowflakes, which many of them revisited several times over the week. Snowman painting was also a huge hit and many children, again, revisited the activity over the week, giving them chance to refine their paintings. As children practiced their skills, we could see obvious progression in their paintings and their pride in their creations was great to see.
