Getting ready write and beyond– building our fine motor skills

As well taking part in our weekly movement play sessions, the children in nursery have access to a wide variety of play opportunities to help develop their fine motor skills. As defined on the gov.uk website, Fine motor skills involve small muscles working with the brain and nervous system to control movements in areas such as the hands, fingers, lips, tongue and eyes. Developing fine motor skills helps children do things like eating, writing, manipulating objects and getting dressed.”

In nursery, there are several areas of provision where children can practice using their fine motor skills, as well as in the day to day routines, such as putting their coats on to play outside, or peeling their fruit at the snack table. We have play dough available as continuous provision to get those hands squeezing and prodding, and building with blocks and bricks, also helps children build strength in their hands.

Of course, children are also invited to draw, mark make and write in a variety of ways, for example at the mark making table, when they are painting and also taking pretend registers when pretending to be the teacher!
