Following instructions to make our own play dough

One of our curriculum action points in Early Years if that every child will be able to follow a set of instructions to make their own play dough. We are practising this already by looking at the photo instructions and listening to the adult sound out a key word like ‘p-u-t’. We take turns to check we have the resources, measure out the ingredients and listen to the blending so we can follow the instructions. We enjoy learning about how the ingredients change as we ‘m-i-x’ them and get to choose any enhancements like scents or textures like glitter.

We are learning to blend to practise early phonics skills as well as listening and speaking skills as we follow the instructions and talk about what we can see. We are also putting our Maths into real life contexts as we count spoons, measure and compare capacity and divide up the finished product to share it at the end. We learn PSED as we learn how to share and take turns or use our manners to pass and ask for the things we need. We explore changes in materials as we mix and add ingredients and use our senses like real scientists. Then we can use our imagination and artistic skills as we mould and sculpt the dough into whatever we want it to be.
