Applying new phonics skills
The children have enjoyed learning all the Phase 2 phonemes including some digraphs. The children are able to tell you that a digraph is ‘2 letters that make 1 sound.’ The Makaton signs have certainly helped the children this year to be more engaged with learning the phonemes and remembering these. It has been wonderful to see the children beginning to apply their knowledge of the taught phonemes to write independently in the areas during playful learning. As a team, we feel so proud of the children and can see that their confidence to write and apply what they know, has grown.
This half term the children have been so enthusiastic to come to us and ask to join in a writing activity, asking ‘when is it my turn’ or ‘can I have a go?’ The children have written a letter to our cheeky Talbot elf which included the tricky word ‘to.’ They then thought about what they wanted to write and worked hard to apply the phonemes they know into their writing by carefully sounding to blend words.
