Physical Education - tennis and athletics

Every half term at Talbot, each year group studies 2 different disciplines in PE. Tennis and athletics are the first units for Year 6, providing them with an opportunity to consolidate their skills from previous years.

In tennis, the children began by practising their forehand shot, before moving onto backhand. In the coming weeks, they will start to apply these skills to a rally, ultimately using their decision-making to decide which shot to use in different situations.

In athletics, the first key focus was running, including both sprinting and long distance. The children considered how to effectively adapt their pace depending on the distance that they were running.

This focus on fitness also links closely to their current Science topic, where the children learn about their bodies, and what happens to their heart when they exercise. Further links between the two subjects will be made later in the half term, when the children will plan and perform an investigation to explore this.
