Science - studying rocks and soils

Year 3 have been incredibly enthusiastic about their Science topic on Rocks and Soils. They began by learning about the formation and properties of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks; using actions to remind them of the differences. Through practical investigations, children developed their understanding of the properties, such as ‘permeable’ and ‘impermeable’. Following this, children considered how fossils and crystals were formed within rocks. Finally, they explored a range of soils, thinking about how they were formed and observing the different textures and particles in each. By using secondary sources, children were able to investigate which types of soils would be best for growing plants too; building on their learning from Year 3.

The passion of the children extended beyond the classroom, with many sharing their own rock collections with us, going geo-caching in their spare time, and digging deep in the playground to discover more rocks, which they couldn’t wait to share with the teachers! We have some budding geologists in the making.
