Faith Assembly – sharing our work on Hinduism with others
In Year 4, the children have really enjoyed learning about Hinduism and shared this with parents and carers at the Faith Assembly. In the assembly, they explained how Hinduism is the World’s oldest religion and is more than 4,000 years old.
Recently, Hindus and Sikhs around the world have been celebrating the festival of Diwali. Hindus celebrate Diwali to remember the story of Rama and Sita who returned after they had defeated the demon Ravenna. It is also known as the festival of light because in the story of Rama and Sita, the people lit diva lamps to welcome them home. Every year, the Hindu community celebrate Diwali with diva lamps and fireworks. We made our own diva lamps as well as Rangoli designs in our computing time. Hindus draw Rangoli patterns to welcome the goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, into their homes.
Sikhs also celebrate Diwali but for a different reason, which the children learned about during their RWV lesson. For Sikhs, Diwali is a time of celebration to remember how Guru Hargobind and 52 princes returned home after being held captive. On his return, diva lamps showed him the way home and now Sikhs also celebrate by lighting diva lamps.
Some of the Hindu and Sikh children shared details of how they celebrate Diwali in their homes and it was really lovely for the children to hear about how their friends celebrate different festivals.
