Art and design – collages of the Land of Ice and Fire

As part of our Connected Curriculum topic ‘Volcanoes and Earthquakes’, the children in Year 4 have been learning about the landscapes and geography of Iceland.  Iceland is a fascinating country known as ‘the Land of Ice and Fire’ because it has active volcanoes and glaciers. It is also known for being a great location to witness the Northern Lights!

The children were inspired by the landscape artist Heatherbell Barlow, as they learned how to use warm and cold colours to create different moods in their art work. The children experimented with a range of mediums and techniques to create the different components of an Icelandic landscape; volcanoes, ice and the northern lights.

The volcanoes were sketched from photos of active volcanoes and then painted in shades of brown and grey to make them have texture and look realistic.

The stunning colours of the northern lights were represented using oil pastels, which were very messy to blend!  The most exciting part of the project was using a technique called marbling to create the colours of lava and ice.

Marbling involves dropping inks into water and then dipping a sheet of paper into the inky water, which creates a really stunning effect. Once we had the different elements we were able to put them together to create our final collage.  The final results were beutiful.
