The importance of oracy – skilled speaking

In Year Two, students are on an exciting journey to enhance their communication skills through the power of oracy. The children are building a solid foundation for their future academic and social success through understanding the importance of developing their speaking skills.

In lessons, students have been discussing why oracy skills are needed and in which situations we use them. They recognised that oracy is an essential part of a child’s everyday life and can be used when playing games with other children, when explaining our feelings and also when making new friends. As with every lesson, children can use their oracy skills when debating ideas with their talk partners. This is a crucial part of learning as children can form new ideas through oral discussions with one-another.

At the end of the children’s first week back in school after a long summer, pupils were given an exciting oracy-based learning log task. The aim of this task was to provide the children with a platform where they could present their ideas to the rest of the class, using their oracy skills to discuss a topic of interest in great detail. Pupils could choose from a range of topics to discuss, such as “if you could choose to be any animal, which would you be and why?” and “describe your favourite hobby or interest”. It takes a great amount of confidence, courage and bravery to talk in front of peers and the children rose to the challenge with great esteem.
