The importance of online safety – avoiding scams

In Computing, Year Two have been revisiting the importance of staying safe when online in the digital world.

The learning coincided with Online Safety Week, where Key Stage One explored the theme of “scams” when browsing the internet. The children attended an assembly delivered by Mr Rivers. They learnt that, sadly, not everybody has honest intentions in the online world and sometimes scammers will try to trick people out of their money. Importantly, if something looks ‘too good to be true’ on the internet, then it probably is.

The children of Talbot Primary School follow the ‘zip it, block it, flag it’ system, when confronted with something inappropriate online. As part of the ‘flag it’ process, children are encouraged to tell a trusted adult if they feel unsafe online. The Year 2 pupils talked about who a trusted adult might be and they listed some of their own trusted adults.

During a Computing lessons, the children then created their own trusted adult posters, to remind themselves of who they could approach to discuss any online problem, that they might encounter. Pupils listed trusted adults at school and at home, so they know they always have someone to go to.
