Teaching Fundamental British Values - Democracy
Year Two learnt about the Fundamental British Value of Democracy when they took part in electing two school council representatives from each class. The role of school councillor is a very important and responsible job where the children have a voice in shaping some of the decisions that are made in school.
The children were given the opportunity to volunteer themselves to be a school councillor. They were amazing at preparing for their speeches, making notes and drawing pictures to help them. Everyone who volunteered for school council applied their Oracy skills when they delivered their fantastic speeches about why they would make a good school councillor. It was wonderful to hear the children describing the ways in which they would make positive changes to our school including showing respect to everyone and having a range of games to play with friends on the playground. The children listened carefully and demonstrated their active listening skills during the election speeches. Following the speeches, each class voted for one boy and one girl to represent their classes. Both Year Two classes were supportive of their peers who were elected, celebrating with them and congratulating them.
The children who have been elected in Year Two now have an important job to do. They will listen to their peers and share the thoughts and ideas they collect from their classes during school council meetings, looking at the ways in which they can continue to make positive changes to our school. Our school councillors are very excited to help choose our new learning journey and to look at the ways in which we can make our school more sustainable.
