English - performance poetry

Year 2 have been buzzing with creativity this term as they explored the wonderful world of performance poetry.

Children began the topic by exploring key poetry vocabulary, including words such as ‘rhyme’ and ‘line’. The Year 2 teachers introduced them to the poem In the Giant’s Rucksack. The children first practised reading the poem independently. They then worked in groups to perform it aloud, adding their own imaginative actions and expressive movements to bring each verse to life.

Over the last week of term, the Year Two classrooms quickly transformed into a hub of poetic, creative energy. Children experimented with repetition and alliteration, discovering how these features can make poems more enjoyable and exciting as they wrote their own versions of ‘in the Giant’s rucksack’. Our favourite part was inventing nonsense words to describe the extraordinary items hidden inside their giant’s rucksack. From squibbles to woobles, each nonsense word-creation was as unique as the child who wrote it.

Once their poems were complete, the children practised performing them aloud. They focused on using expression, clear voices and confident actions to bring their ideas to life. It was wonderful to see children sharing their work proudly with the class.
