Creative writing and presentational talk

One of our English units in the Spring term was based on ‘The Lorax’ by Doctor Seuss. First, we created a descriptive piece of writing about the environmental changes to the Lorax’s home before and after the Onceler arrived. For the second part of our unit, we created a diary from the view point of one of the characters from the text.

The children had great fun choosing which character they wanted to be when creating their diary. They carefully planned what they were going to write about, focusing on what their character and other characters had done during the day, applying their knowledge from the text.

They worked carefully to ensure their diaries included all the features they had learnt about, including writing in the first person with expanded noun phrases to describe and conjunctions to extend their ideas. Emotions were also included to ensure the reader understood how the characters felt at different points within the children’s diaries.

Finally, Year Two applied their oracy skills where they used presentation talk to present their dairies to a range of partners. As the audience, the other children listened carefully, giving feedback on what they enjoyed and why. We hope you enjoy listening to a selection of our diaries as much as we enjoyed writing them.
