Physical Education - rocking and rolling in gymnastics
During the Autumn term, our year 1 children embarked on an exciting journey into the world of gymnastics. During our lessons, the children had opportunities to develop their physical skills, coordination and confidence through various activities on mats and on apparatus, both flat and on inclines. A key focus of their learning was mastering a range of rolls, each designed to enhance different movements skills and body awareness.
Our first roll was the Log roll which involved lying flat on the floor with arms extended overhead and rolling side to side like a log. It helps children develop balance and coordination as they learn to maintain a straight body line through the roll.
Next, we learnt a Barrell roll. Unlike the log roll, the barrel roll requires the children o tuck their arms and legs in, resembling a barrel shape. This roll encourages agility and spatial awareness children learn to control their bodies while moving.
Our last roll to learn was the forward roll. In this roll the children learnt to tick their heads and roll forward over their shoulders, ending in a seated or standing position. Mastering this skill is a significant achievement for young gymnasts and sets the foundation for more advanced techniques.
Overall, these gymnastics lessons were a fantastic way for our Year 1 children to begin their physical education journey, setting the stage for lifelong appreciation of movement and fitness.
