Physical education – developing ball control

The dribbling lesson with our Year One classes was a lively and engaging lesson that focused on developing basic ball control skills in a fun and supportive environment. The main aim of the lesson was to introduce the children to dribbling using their hands, helping them to become more confident moving a ball, whilst maintaining control.

They began with a warm-up game to get the children moving and excited. Whilst jogging around they had to respond the simple commands such as stopping, changing direction or jumping. This helped raise their heart rate and prepare their bodies for physical activity. Once warmed up, each child was given a ball and were taught how to hold their balls still.

Year 1 then moved on to learning how to dribble the ball using small, gentle touches using the palm of our hand. The children had time to practice freely moving around the hall at the own pace, building confidence without pressure. They were then challenged further by dribbling the ball higher/lower around in different shapes and around cones. They had to ensure they didn’t let go of the ball.
