Art and design – making extraordinary collages
In art and design, Year 1 learnt about the Impressionist artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
Giuseppe Arcimboldo was an Italian painter best known for creating imaginative portraits made entirely of objects, including fruit, vegetables, flowers, fish and books.
After learning a little about his life and art, Year 1 used pictures of fruit and overlapped them to make the shape of a face; in this way, they imitated the work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo. After making their art, there was an opportunity for the children to reflect on the process and the outcomes, so they could evaluate their work.
After, created a face using a collage of fruit, the children then had a go at creating a portrait of a face by drawing different fruits to represent different parts of a face. We had bananas for a nose, broccoli for hair and so much more.
Some children were so inspired, that they took their learning further, and they had a go at home too. They used real fruits and vegetables to make faces at home which was lovely to see.
