Art and design – extraordinary collages
In art and design, Year 1 learnt about the Impressionist artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
Giuseppe Arcimboldo was an Italian painter best known for creating imaginative portraits made entirely of objects, including fruit, vegetables, flowers, fish and books.
After learning a little about his life and art, Year 1 had a go at creating their own Arcimboldo inspired self-portraits. They started by drawing an outline of their face. They then drew fruits and vegetables to represent different facial features, for example some children drew a banana for a mouth. Once they had sketched out their designs they used water colour paints to add colour to their designs.
After making their self-portrait, there was an opportunity for the children to reflect on the process and the outcomes, so they could evaluate their work.
