Leeds Beckett intensive PE lessons – learning from experts
his year, Talbot Primary School is deepening its links with Leeds Beckett University.
For two PE lessons this term, Year 3 children were taught by a cohort of undergraduate teachers, from Leeds Beckett University, specializing in PE. This was organised so that the trainee teachers continued the normal sequence of PE lessons. This meant Year 3 continued to learn rugby as normal.
The undergraduates worked intensively with the children, offering more individualized coaching in groups of six – meaning they all worked up a good sweat by the end of each session! Moreover, the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and appreciated the extra guidance they received.
“It was our first rugby lesson so we had a lot to learn. We started by warming up with side steps and heel flicks. The coaches taught us how to throw a rugby ball properly by making a long, smooth pass (not a short, jerky pass) and putting some spin on the ball. When we caught it, we had to make a W shape with our hands. The coaches were kind and friendly, and we would like to see them again.”

At the end of each lesson, the trainee teachers, reviewed their planning and delivery to ensure they got as much as possible out of the experience. We are proud to support them in their journeys to become the PE teachers and subject leaders of the future; they were a credit to Leeds Beckett University. A special mention to PE lecturer, Ryan Ellis, who organised the event with school – thank you.
