Learning about synonyms – shades of meaning
In year 3, the children have been learning abut synonyms. Synonyms are words which have the same, or similar meanings, and are important because they help to build vocabulary and give variety and interest to a piece of writing.
The children studied a variety of synonyms and worked together in group to order them from most to least extreme. For example, the word cheerful has synonyms including elated, which is more extreme, and content, which is less extreme. These are now displayed in their classrooms to use when they are working and improving their work.
