Art and design - discovering the Bell Beaker People
This term, our classes embarked on a fascinating journey back to the Bronze Age to learn about the Bell Beaker people, one of Europe’s most intriguing prehistoric cultures. The Bell Beaker people, named after their distinctive pottery, were newcomers to Britain around 2500 BC who introduced bronze tools and weapons, and helped start the Bronze Age in Britain.
The children began by examining images of original Bell Beaker pottery. These distinctive vessels, with their bell-shaped forms and intricate geometric patterns, gave us a glimpse into the daily lives and culture of people who lived thousands of years ago.
Inspired by what they saw, the children then set about designing and making their very own pottery. Using clay, tools, and plenty of imagination, they recreated the characteristic shapes and decorations of Bell Beaker vessels.
This project was more than just an art lesson—it was an opportunity to connect with history in a tangible way. By handling clay and carving patterns, the children experienced how ancient people shared their culture and the importance of something as simple as a clay pot, reminding us that history isn’t just something we read about—it’s something we can touch, shape, and bring to life.
