Design technology – constructing light boxes with circuits
Year 5 used their DT and Science skills to create a unique light box. After looking at various designs, functions and real-life light boxes, Year 5 got to work designing their own. Once designs were established, the children then began the construction.
Using bench hooks and saw, children sawed their carefully measured wooden dowels to the correct lengths. All children demonstrated a brilliant technique, ensuring they were safe throughout the process. Before building the frame, it was important to ensure all pieces were the exact same length. This was done using sand paper.
Next, the pieces were glued together in a square frame and corners were reinforced using card to add additional strength. Squares were then turned into cubes, ready for the outer cladding using card.
Finally, once the design was sketched and added to the front using translucent tracing paper, Year 5 used their knowledge of electricity to assemble an individual circuit to place inside the frame. The real test was in the dark!
As you can see, the illuminated boxes look fantastic. The children were excited to take them home and proudly place them in their new positions for their families to enjoy. Well done, Year 5!
