Day of Languages - Celebrating different cultures

As part of a whole school celebration of different languages, their identity and the power of talk, Year 5 focused on New Zealand and Maori in 5PK and Spain and Spanish in 5JS. Both classes embraced the different cultures and learnt more about their chosen country and how to say a variety of greetings and phrases in their respective languages.

To get into the spirit of New Zealand, 5PK started the day learning about the origin and meaning behind the haka, traditionally performed by the Maori people of New Zealand to display a tribe’s pride, strength and unity and as a way to celebrate, entertain, welcome and challenge visiting tribes. This was followed by a fantastic performance of the dance from one of our parents. 5PK were taught key words and greetings by one of their classmates, before hearing about visits to New Zealand, enjoyed photos and reading several Maori legends. 5JS also learnt key Spanish greetings and phrases, practising with each other. They also enjoyed opportunities in maths to learn how to say numbers in Spanish. The day was filled with a brilliant buzz and enjoyed by all.
