As part of our Anglo Saxon topic, Year 4 visited Roundhay Park. We wanted to put ourselves in the shoes of the Anglo Saxon settlers who were invited to Britain to fight the Picts and Scots in the north or who simply chose to settle here.
A successful Anglo Saxon settlement would need access to water, have space to grow crops and rear animals and would need supplies of wood to build houses and keep fires burning. It would also be worth considering how sheltered a place was and how easily it could be defended. We visited 5 different sites around the park to decide how suitable they would be for a settlement.
