Art and design – inspired by famous artists

Have you ever heard of Yayoi Kusama? Maybe you might have heard of Barbara Hepworth?

In Reception, the children looked at different artists, including Kusama and Hepworth’s, whose artwork is very different from one another. During group work and during ‘playful learning’, the children were inspired by these artists, and they began to create their own art in a similar style.

Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist, who is sometimes called ‘the princess of polka dots.’ Although she makes lots of different types of art like paintings, sculptures and performances – they all have one thing in common – lots of dots.

Another artist, that the children were inspired by, was Barbara Hepworth. She is one of the most famous female artists in the UK, and her work is recognised all over the world. Hepworth is well-known for her modern sculptures, made from materials such as stone, wood and bronze.

Children in both classes created work inspired by these two artists, and they developed their ideas further by adding lots of texture and detail to the artwork.
